Editing Vertical Planting Details

To create a Vertical crop plan in AgSquared, you'll want to add all of the crops and plantings that you intend to grow to your Crops Tool.  If you want to delete plantings for any reason, you can do that within the Crops Tool as well.

Adding Crops

You can add a crop by clicking on the add crop icon in the Crops Tool.  In the form that opens, enter in your crop's name (required), a description of the crop (optional), and any beneficial functions (optional) it may have. You can also select an icon for your crop from the list of icons.

The icons are arranged in alphabetical order, and if you can't find an icon that matches your crop, you can choose one that is similar to it or just use the grey default crop icon.

When you are done, click save and your crop will be added to your Crops Tool.  At anytime you can edit the information you've entered about a crop by simply clicking on the crop's name and revealing its Overview tab. To do so, click on the Edit Crop button (pencil icon) in any crop's Overview Tab:

Once you have added a crop to your account, the next step is to create and add plantings that belong to that crop.   There are 2 ways that you can add a new planting:

  1. Click on the +Planting button.

  2. Go to the Overview tab of any Crop and click on +Add a new planting (circled in red below)

Edit Planting Form: Page 1

In the Edit Planting Form that opens, enter your crop's name (required), common name (optional), and variety (required), planting material (optional) and Planting type (required see below)

Planting Types

On the right side of page 1 of the Edit Planting Form, enter in the planting type that you are adding. Planting type is an important designation because this is where you will designate your planting as a Vertically grown planting.

There are 4 Planting type options, the one you want to select for any vertically grown planting is always Vertical Towers.

To learn more about planting types, see this article.

Click "Save and Continue"  to go the second page of the Edit Planting Form where you can enter information about the planting's sowing, transplant and harvest dates, or Click “Save and Exit” to save your planting without adding any more information.

On the second page of the Edit Planting form, you can enter in key dates associated with your planting, including sowing, transplant and harvest dates.  Depending on how you'd like to schedule your plantings, you can use this form to calculate your dates for you. For example, if you know when you'd like to sow your planting and its days to maturity, you can use the calculator in the following manner:

  1. Enter the desired Sowing Date and Days to Maturity. The calculator will then calculate the First Harvest date (you might need to click on the First Harvest date box to trigger the calculation).

  2. Next enter your anticipated harvest duration. The Final Harvest date for that planting will then be calculated.

  3. Click Save and Exit and your planting and its dates will be added to its respective crop in the Crops tool. Alternatively, you could follow the steps above in reverse order to calculate backwards from a desired final harvest date.

Check out the video below to see how this form works:

Once you have entered your dates, click Save and your dates will be saved and visible in the plantings' Overview Tab. At this point you can enter in more information about a planting, such as its location, layout, and spacing, by clicking the Edit Sowing Details button found in the Overview tab.

Editing Vertical Planting Details

Editing your vertical planting details in AgSquared utilizes the AgSquared planting gives you the opportunity to utilize the AgSquared Planting calculators to calculate and determine the details of your plantings.  There are 4 different options for calculating your plantings.

Each grower typically approaches their planting setup a little bit differently.  The calculator options give you a lot of flexibility in where to start when calculating your planting details.

Number of Seeds - If you know how many seeds you will be planting and want to calculate your row and bed length, as well as your expected harvest for a planting, select the Calculating from Number of Seeds option at the top of the Calculator.

Expected Harvest - When you are Calculating from Expected Harvest, you are calculating from the bottom up.  You are figuring your Row and Bed Space, as well as Number of Seeds based on your Expected Harvest.

Space Available - You can use the Calculate from Area feature to calculate how many seeds you will need to plant  and what your harvest will be based on how much space you have available in Total Area or Number of Towers.

You will notice that some of the boxes are shaded in gray if you choose a Calculate from option.  These boxes are calculated using the AgSquared calculator tool.   As you enter data, the AgSquared Calculators will work for you and calculate the data in the gray shaded boxes based on the information that you have entered in to the white un-shaded boxes.

Defining Tower Dimensions

Tower Height - This is literally the vertical height of the growing space of each individual tower.

Total Tower Length - This is the combined heights of all of the towers in your layout.   The total length is the total amount of growing space or bed space that you will be planting into for a given planting.

Number of Towers - This number represents the number of towers that will be planted into for a given planting.

Area Per Tower - Total area that each tower takes up in greenhouse or total are of growing space within tower.  Also same for Total Area
